How the AeroCarbon Bucks™ Carbon Trail™ emissions calculator works

By estimating the carbon dioxide emissions from each of your flights using the distance traveled and a number of basic assumptions we can derive an overall emissions estimate. This number should be regarded as a general guide rather than a precise figure.

We base these estimates on the greenhouse gas emissions by the World Resource Institute.

The carbon index is an approximation based on industry averages. Here is the process:

  1. Calculate the distance between your origin and destination city [we use basic trigonometry using the latitude and longitude of the departure and arrival airports]. This calculation does not include ‘stopovers’ of your flights.
  2. Categorize the flight as short, medium, or long. Airplanes burn more fuel at takeoff and landing than at cruising altitude, therefore, short trips are less fuel-efficient per mile flown.
  3. Calculate each type of trip (short, medium or long) and the fuel burn rate on average per mile of the flight.
  4. Multiply the fuel burn rate by the distance of the trip to determine the quantity of fuel burned per passenger for that particular flight.
  5. Calculate the pounds of CO2 you are resposible for and post that number.

If you wish to calculate the effect of stopovers, simply enter the legs of the flight as separate trips.

The exact amount of fuel burned per passenger per mile varies on each type of aircraft. Some of the specific factors include; the number of passengers aboard, the weight of the cargo hauled, winds aloft, etc.

We could supply you with a very specific calculator, but you would probably drive the airline employees crazy with all your questions, instead we use an industry specific average.

The resulting flight emissions profile will provide you a close approximation of the greenhouse gas generated that impacts global warming when you choose to fly. In most cases, the impact is much larger than one would assume it to be.

The National Organization for American Humanities is an accountable American non-profit 501(c)3 and World entity. We have accepted the challenge to support those causes and activities which directly benefit the world. Presently, NOAH’s primary goal is to support environmental education and elimination of Global Warming caused by Greenhouse Gases.
