Greenhouse Gases? What is an Offset? Tax Deductible? Why Join NOAH?

Here are the most asked questions:

  1. What are Greenhouse Gases?
  2. What is an Offset?
  3. What is the big deal with Climate Change?
  4. What has Climate change got to do with me?
  5. What is Climate Change 101?
  6. What is the Greenhouse Effect?
  7. What can I do?

The hot topic of 2007 is Global Warming, or more specifically, the Global Climate Change that is occurring.

It seems everyone has an opinion. Here is ours: The supposed changes in the climate are due to increase Greenhouse Gases, specifically, CARBON. We agree. But, here is the problem, no one agrees on a remedy. To find a remedy these questions need to be addressed and answered. Where did this Carbon come from? Why now? How do we reduce the amount of Carbon in the atmosphere?

Where did this Carbon come from?
Oil WellIt has always been here, just not released into the atmosphere. Carbon is in everything. Usually ‘stored’ in a natural ‘sink’ such as the earth itself. This ‘sink’ can be in the form of ‘oil’ that we pump out of the ground and release into the atmosphere by burning it to create energy for our electricity, automobiles and to heat our homes as an example. Once the oil is burned, Carbon is released into the atmosphere and then we have a form of Greenhouse gas.

Another example is wood. Trees are a natural ‘sink’ for Carbon. Once cut down and either decomposed or burned, Carbon is released into the atmosphere and then we have more Greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Case in point, how many trees have been cut down in America in the last 300 years? How many have been replaced?

Why now?
The more population on the earth using the stored Carbon for fuels, the more Greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, the more the climate is effected by the Greenhouse effect.

How do we reduce the amount of Carbon in the atmosphere?

  1. One of the simplest but most controversial long term solution is population control. Quit making 5 babies to replace the two propagators. When the infant mortality rate was significantly higher and children were needed to assist the family to survive, then larger families were acceptable. Not anymore.
  2. The next solution is to curb your use of energy.
  3. The final solution is to create or perfect an energy source that is not Carbon based.
