What are Carbon Offsets?

An Offset is a process in which you can reduce or negate your carbon dioxide emissions in another locale due to the emissions you cause through your lifestyle. Your lifestyle includes anything that causes emissions, directly or indirectly.

As an example of direct emissions, burning natural gas in your home or office e for heat, cooking or water heating, your commuting in your car or travel in an airplane or train.

Indirect emissions are from the consumption of electricity used in your home for lighting, heat, cooking or running your electronics at home or work. All of these direct and indirect activities that use energy and cause emissions.

Carbon offsets enable anyone to reduce their carbon footprint or Carbon Trail™ by supporting projects that are energy efficient and create renewable energy. Other ways of Offsetting is by sequestration of carbon dioxide and proper use of biomass, etc. Both of these will reduce carbon dioxide emissions that are credited towards offset one’s own Carbon Trail™.

Carbon dioxide emissions are released into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas. Obviously, your direct emissions come from your car which uses gasoline or diesel. But your indirect emissions come from your house and office as well as  factories that produce the goods that you consume such as your clothes or from restaurants, movie theaters and other places we patron and use every day. All of these manufacturing and service industries use electricity and energy that generally comes from power plants that use fossil fuels. More than 50% of America’s electricity is derived from coal and virtually all our transportation needs are fueled by oil.

The typical American is responsible for 10 tons of direct CO2 emissions annually through their direct energy use and about 24 tons of indirect CO2 including their purchases, activities and the other services we all share throughout the economy.
While most people can reduce their Carbon Trail™ by using energy more efficiently, we strongly support, reducing your emissions to as close to zero as possible through your individual actions at home and at work. Carbon offsets are a cost effective way to reduce the remainder of one’s Carbon Trail™.

How much you can reduce your Carbon Trail™ in your home or car verses Offsetting through 123 CarbonCounter is your personal and economic decision. 123 CarbonCounter of NOAH Foundation is an American non-profit 501(c)(3) that has a goal to make it easy and affordable for every person or business to reduce their Carbon Trailtm to zero.
