What if you use our database, and you can't find your car?
In the event that you decide to use the posted EPA averages, and your car is missing from our database, then estimate its yearly carbon output by inputting your car's average miles per gallon and the distance you drive each year.

You can either enter the Miles Per Gallon (MPG) that you know your car gets or we can use the average gas mileage of your car based on the year, make, and model posted by the Environmental Protection Agency's ratings. Go to their web site at fueleconomy.gov for more information. Here is a quick reference for your Travel.

If you do not put in a specific MPG, we will make an assumption about how the ratio of highways vs. city street miles driven that you spend half your time on highways.

The average American drives 12,000 miles per year. However you can input this figure yourself. Then, we figure out how many gallons of gas you burn every year.
Next, we multiply the number of gallons of gas by 19.564, diesel by 20.214, to conclude how many pounds of carbon dioxide your are responsible for. [Please Note: A typical car puts out many times its own weight in carbon dioxide every year because when fuel burns, it combines with oxygen in the air and becomes much heavier.]

Each web site my have a slightly different number of pounds of carbon dioxide due to their method of calculation and which other greenhouse gases that they include in the calculation or different assumptions about your driving habits, or a different fuel rating for your car.

Why would my car not be in your database?
The fuel mileage data we use is from the Environmental Protection Agency's ratings. However, manufacturers do not test every new vehicle offered for sale. They are only required to test one representative vehicle—typically a preproduction prototype—for each combination of loaded vehicle weight class, transmission class, and basic engine. If it is not covered by the EPA then it will probably not be in our database.
